Ryukyu Buyo (Ryukyuan Dance)
Ryukyu buyo is the classical performing art of the Ryukyu Kingdom — a sovereign island nation nestled in the crystal-clear waters between Japan and China, now known as Okinawa.
Positioned at the crossroads of East Asia, the Kingdom flourished for over 450 years as a vibrant center of international exchange, welcoming envoys and travelers from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia alike.
Born in the royal courts of Shuri Castle, these dances were performed as ceremonial offerings to distinguished guests — expressing the Kingdom's elegance and cultural richness through fluid hand gestures, deliberate footwork, and the resonant tones of the sanshin, a traditional three-stringed instrument.
Today, Ryukyu buyo stands as one of Japan's most treasured classical performing arts — a living bridge between an ancient kingdom and the world we inhabit today.
